A Brief History of Lancaster Commandery #2
A meeting was held at the Market House in Lancaster on 4 April 1837, at which Lancaster Commandery was organized by Sir Knight John Barney of Clinton Encampment in Connecticut, Sir Knight J.W. Copeland of Calvary Encampment in Vermont, and Sir Knights William J. Reese and George Sanderson of Worthington Encampment (now Mt. Vernon Commandery #1) in Ohio.
Meetings were held on four consecutive days and knighted the following: Sir Knights Gottlieb Steinman, M.Z. Kreider, John G, Willock, Gabriel Carpenter, and Henry Orman. Sir Knights George H. Smith and Daniel Sifford received their knighthood a short time later.
Deputy Grand Master J.K. Stapleton issued a Charter at Baltimore, Maryland in December 1837, by virtue of the authority given to him by the "Grand Encampment of the United States for permission to start an Encampment at Lancaster, Ohio."
On April 14, 1838 Lancaster Encampment was organized. The first election took place thirteen days later, and the following officers were elected:

Captain General: Joseph Grubb
Prelate: Enos Woodward
Senior Warden: Michael Z. Kreider
Junior Warden: John G. Willock
Treasurer: Gottlieb Steinman

Warder: Gabriel Carpenter
Sentinel: George W. Claspill
